This is a stylized Ivy leaf brooch created in bronze with chasing and repoussé. Chasing and repoussé are ancient techniques used to create bas-relief in images in sheet metal. The metal is shaped using hammers and small chisel-like tools, called chasing tools. The tools are used to sculpt the metal, pushing and stretching it, rather than cutting it. Chasing refers to work done primarily from the front, while repousse refers to work done primarily from the back.
The entire brooch is antiqued, polished, and then lightly sealed with a coating of tung oil varnish.
This brooch would be stunning on a solid color dress, coat lapel, or scarf. It measures approximately 1.75 x 1.75 inches at it's maximum dimensions.
